'This night is for you, moms:' UMS-Wright students put on a party for Sybil H. Smith residents

GEMs, a group of ninth-graders at UMS-Wright Preparatory School, put that idea into practice on Wednesday night with a "Mom's Night Out" at Dumas Wesley Community Center for residents of Sybil H. Smith Family Village across the street, which is a transitional housing program for homeless women and their children.

The UMS chapter of GEMs, which stands for Girls Enrichment Ministry, began five years ago under the guidance of Mimi Patrick, whose children attend the school. The group first began meeting for Bible study, but their activities expanded into service projects.
